Sadly, the rumours are true.It is with regret that we are announcing the closure of Hospital Radio Crawley. It was not an easy decision to make, and certainly not one that was taken lightly. The station has been run by a group of dedicated volunteers since the early 70’s, providing a personalised service of music, news and information to the patients of Crawley Hospital, and organising many and varied fund raising events that you may even have had the fun of joining in with. These included the annual Marathon Bowls that raised many thousands of pounds for both us and our partner charity for these, MacMillan Cancer, and the numerous ‘throw yourself off the roof of the Hospital’ abseils (facilitated by our good friends The Royal Artillery) which we ran in conjunction with the BBCs Children in Need.We were the first Hospital Radio Station in the South to be granted a licence to enable us to go onto AM radio (12878am) too. We established strong links with venues such as The Hawth, and regularly interviewed the stars and celebrities of the many shows there. In later years, HRC also became much more involved with promoting live music, regularly running shows with local musicians, and also running ‘showcases’ at several local hostelries! However, and inevitably, things change. The Hospital itself changed in its role, with the main services being transferred to Redhill, so it has become more of a day-care facility, which naturally meant that we lost our listeners! Added to this, higher running costs also took their toll, to a point where it sadly becomes impractical to continue. The Station and its members can be justifiably proud of what we have achieved over the years in our service to the Patients and Staff of Crawley Hospital.

Our last broadcast will be on Sunday September 8th, following a 30 hour ‘marathon broadcast’ in conjunction with St Catherines Hospice, with a 2 hour show from 6-8pm celebrating what we have achieved, and featuring many members past and present. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our listeners for the pleasure of their company, and the ‘loan’ of their ears, and the many people who have supported us in so many ways over the last 40 plus years with their help, generosity and time.
